Regional street food restaurants of all variations are popping up across London, and this small operation is now a legend. Bao is London’s equivalent of Momofuku’s Ssäm Bar - it’s all about the steamed buns. Sadly, the only dish we vegetarians could taste was the fried turnip bun. It was almost too small to give a tastiness rating. What a shame! Since this endeavour is backed by the prolific JKS restaurant group (who are defining what London will eat next), presumably these steamed buns are something special. We’re not saying they’re not, we simply needed a bit more of a bite to form an opinion.

To go or Not to go
We say, if you’re hungry and looking for plant-forward satisfaction, this is probably not for you. But for those intrigued by this culinary trend, our tip is to avoid the 45 minute queue at the Soho branch and head to Netil Market E8 on a Saturday where buns are a-plenty before noon.
