The second Gunpowder opened in summer 2018 with 100 covers and terrace seating overlooking the iconic Tower Bridge. A short distance from both Borough and Maltby Street Markets, Bridge Theatre and Thames Path, it is open for lunch, dinner, pre-theatre dining and weekend brunch. Half of the menu is vegetarian but lacking in choices for vegans. The dining approach is small plates, thoughtfully assembled. We think the highlight was the broccoli but to be honest, by afternoon we remembered very little from our meal. A little disjointed and underwhelming, Gunpowder didn’t have the spice explosion that one expects from a decent Indian.

Fine if you want to beat the queues at Dishoom or don’t have time for the short walk to Brick Lane. But for plant-forward foodies, this place doesn’t need to go on the ‘must do’ list. Go with trendy colleagues for a lunch that won’t break the bank. Tables are available on a first-come-first-served policy.
