Product of the Week: Halen Môn Oak Smoked Water

This week’s product is from Halen Môn, the natural Anglesey Sea Salt company, makers of, in our opinion, the best sea salt on the market (chefs, royals and even Barack Obama agree). Their sea salt is one of the vital ingredients in products like Green & Black’s chocolate and Piper’s Crisps. But it’s not just sea salt that they are known for, but also for their range of inventive and delicious sauces and cooking ingredients. Our favourite ingredient has to be, hands down, the Oak Smoked Water (followed in close second by their smoked salt), made by smoking water in a kiln with oak chippings. Yes, that’s it, just water and smoke and none of the artificial flavours or preservatives that you’ll find in products like liquid smoke and there is no need to break out your BBQ or splurge on one of those smoking gadgets. This is our secret weapon for adding for adding depth and flavour to soups, stews, risottos, sauces and we’ve not tried this yet, but you can even add a few drops when making ice cubes to liven up your cocktails. And if you’re still aren’t convinced of the endless possibilities for adding a delicious, subtle smokey flavour to your cooking, have a look at the recipes here and you’ll be suitably inspired and convinced that everything tastes better smoked. You can buy the Smoked Water, as well as other Halen Môn products in many delis across the UK & Marks and Spencer, Ocado, Waitrose and Harvey Nichols and on Halen Môn’s online shop. And even if you don’t live in the UK, you may still be able to get your hands on some of their salt as it’s sold in more than 22 countries across the globe and sits on the tables of some of the world’s top restaurants. And, it’s still for sale at Swains in Menai Bridge, their very first local supplier.
